Month-by-Month Guide
January
January is proper winter in Liechtenstein, with temperatures hovering around freezing and snow likely at all elevations. It's ski season in full swing, so the mountain resorts are busy even though the valleys might feel quiet. Days are short and cold, but if you're here for winter sports, conditions are typically excellent.
February
February stays cold with just a slight warming trend as winter continues. You'll still see plenty of snow in the mountains, making it another solid month for skiing and winter activities. The days start getting noticeably longer, though you're still looking at proper winter weather throughout.
March
March marks the transition toward spring, with temperatures climbing into the 50s°F during the day, though nights remain cold. Snow starts melting at lower elevations while the mountains hold onto winter conditions. Rainfall increases slightly as the weather becomes more unpredictable—you might see sunshine, rain, and snow all in one day.
April
Spring arrives properly in April with temperatures reaching 60°F and the valleys turning green. The weather can still be changeable—you'll want layers as mornings are cool but afternoons can be quite pleasant. Higher elevation trails might still have snow, but lower altitude hiking becomes accessible again.
May
May is genuinely lovely, with temperatures in the upper 60s°F and the Alpine meadows coming into bloom. Rainfall does increase noticeably, but you'll have long days and generally pleasant conditions. It's an excellent time for hiking before the summer crowds arrive, though you'll want to pack a rain jacket for occasional showers.
June
June brings proper summer weather with temperatures in the low 70s°F—warm but not oppressive. This is when rainfall really picks up as afternoon thunderstorms become common in the mountains. Tourist season is getting into gear, and hiking conditions are excellent at all elevations, assuming you time your walks to avoid the storms.
July
July is the warmest month, though at 76°F it's hardly scorching—quite comfortable actually. It's also the wettest month, with over 5 inches of rain typically falling in afternoon thunderstorms. Peak tourist season means popular sites get busy, but the long days and warm temperatures make it ideal for outdoor activities if you don't mind the occasional downpour.
August
August mirrors July with similar temperatures and even more rainfall—the wettest month of the year. Those afternoon thunderstorms are practically a daily occurrence in the mountains. It's still peak season for visitors, and the weather remains warm enough for all outdoor activities, just plan for rain and you'll be fine.
September
September is a sweet spot for many visitors—temperatures cool to the upper 60s°F, rainfall decreases from the summer peak, and crowds thin out as schools resume. The weather tends to be more stable than summer, and you'll catch early autumn colors in the forests. It's one of the better months for hiking with fewer afternoon storms.
October
October brings proper autumn with temperatures dropping to around 60°F and the forests turning brilliant colors. Rainfall continues to decrease, though you'll see more overcast days. It's getting too cold for some outdoor activities, but it's a beautiful time for photography and cultural exploration before winter sets in.
November
November is the transition to winter, with temperatures dropping into the 40s°F and the first snow likely appearing in the mountains. Days are noticeably shorter and the weather can feel gray and damp. It's quiet tourism-wise, which means lower prices, but you're trading that for less appealing weather and limited daylight.
December
December brings winter in earnest with temperatures back around freezing and snow accumulating in the mountains. The Christmas markets add charm to the cold weather, and ski season typically opens by mid-month. Days are at their shortest, but if you're into winter activities or holiday atmosphere, it has its appeal.
